  • Cork fleets 76 electric cars

Cork fleets 76 electric carsThe Irish city of Cork has commissioned 76 electric vehicles to replace combustion engines. The Renault Kangoo ZE, Nissan Leaf and Hyundai Kona are used by city employees in the areas of road and apartment maintenance, park management and waste disposal.

Two of the vehicles are said to be available as pool vehicles for City Hall employees. According to the city, Cork is now the largest emission-free fleet in the country. The exchange of the fleet was implemented within a few months because the city of Cork only leased the vehicles and did not buy them. With the expiring leasing contracts, it was easier to replace the vehicles with electrified models.

Previously, a field test had been carried out over several months to get to know the needs of the vehicles and to be able to prepare themselves and the employees for the new company cars. "When I found out that we were going to drive electric cars, my main concern was that they had to be connected every five minutes and you didn't get far," said one of the test drivers, according to Irish media. "But after driving it for a few weeks, that fear was soon relieved. Most of the time you recharge them once or twice a week and that's it. ”

With the support of the Irish utility Bord Gais Energy, quick charging stations for the new electric fleet were installed at the town hall. Another 30 charging stations are available to the public across the city through various providers.

When it comes to deciding to convert around a quarter of its entire fleet to electric vehicles, the city not only cites environmental reasons. "We did this because it is the most cost-effective solution for our fleet and is technically viable," says project manager Fergus Gleeson. Combustion engines are still used in trucks and heavy commercial vehicles, but the fleet's diesel consumption has already decreased by 20 percent. In the next five years, Cork wants to save 700,000 euros with the electric vehicles.
