  • Mercedes eVito panel van receives drive upgrade

Mercedes eVito panel van receives drive upgradeMercedes-Benz has presented a comprehensive upgrade of the electric drive train (eATS) in the eVito panel van. The battery capacity increases by 70 percent to now 60 kWh. In addition, the van is equipped with a DC fast charging function ex works.

We remember: The eVito was previously split in two: the eVito panel van, designed for craftsmen and last-mile logisticians, previously only had a 41.4 kWh battery (150 to 186 kilometers range) and a pure AC charging solution. In 2020, however, the revised eVito Tourer got the drive from the passenger car counterpart EQV : The electric motor has an output of 150 kW, the 90 kWh (net) battery enables the greater range of for passenger transport such as ride hailing or the regulatory environment up to 421 kilometers according to NEDC - and a DC charging power of up to 110 kW. At the beginning of October , Mercedes announced a smaller battery with 60 kWh net for the EQV and eVito Tourer.

For the new eVito panel van, Mercedes-Benz Vans uses precisely this modular system: In contrast to the eVito Tourer, it retains its 85 kW asynchronous machine (70 kW continuous output) and does not switch to the 150 kW engine. Instead of the 41.4 kWh battery, a battery with 60 kWh of usable energy content will also be installed in the panel van in the future - the gross figure is 66 kWh. The larger 90 kWh battery is not available even for a surcharge. For daily use in the CEP industry with overnight depot charging, the 242 to 314 kilometers according to WLTP (instead of the above-mentioned maximum of 186 kilometers) will probably be sufficient even for most operations in unfavorable weather conditions.

The eVito panel van is also based on the data of the Tourer when it comes to charging power: 50 kW DC charging power is standard, the eVito panel van can charge up to 80 kW for an extra charge. The charging time from ten to 80 percent is then 50 or 35 minutes. The water-cooled AC onboard charger enables three-phase charging with 11 kW.

From the tourer, the panel van also takes over the positioning of the CCS charging socket in the front left bumper - on the previous model, the AC port was behind the driver's door instead of the filler neck, which was not always an advantage in everyday life, like our test of the eVito panel van in the summer 2019 showed.

Recuperation can be set using the paddles on the steering wheel. A new feature in the panel van is the D-Auto level, as is familiar from other Mercedes electric car models. The system itself uses information from various sensors and safety systems to determine how much energy flows back into the battery or how much the vehicle decelerates depending on the situation. This is intended to support forward-looking and energy-saving driving.

Speaking of energy-saving driving: the eVito panel van is delivered from the factory with a top speed of 80 km / h. However, 100 or 120 km / h are also available as options.

Since the 60 kWh battery is also built into the underbody as before, the loading volume of up to 6.6 cubic meters is not restricted. The extra-long version achieves this value with a total length of 5.37 meters, alternatively the long version with 5.14 meters is available. Here the load space holds a maximum of 6.0 cubic meters. However, there is one limitation with the larger (and somewhat heavier) battery: the maximum payload is no longer 1,016 kilograms, but 888 kilograms 8 (53 kilograms for the extra-long version). In practice, however, the effect is likely to be minor, since in the parcel industry in particular, the load volume is more decisive than the payload.

The eVito panel van starts at 45,990 euros net. It includes a maintenance package for four years - which covers the costs of maintenance work in accordance with the service booklet and manufacturer's specifications during this period - as well as the Mercedes-Benz battery certificate for up to 160,000 kilometers or eight years.

"I am pleased that with the new Mercedes-Benz eVito panel van we are opening up commercial electromobility for even more fields of application and that, thanks to the greater range, we are also offering a solution for suburban and rural areas," says Klaus Rehkugler, Head of Sales & Marketing at Mercedes- Benz Vans, at the launch of the new eVito. “With regard to the scope of its equipment, attractive leasing rates and public funding, the eVito is on par with a conventionally powered Vito in terms of TCO in many applications. This is an important aspect, especially for tradespeople and fleet managers, and makes it clear once again that electromobility is now absolutely suitable for everyday use. ”
