Introduced last year , Jeep will only market the 2022 Wrangler as part-time electricity in large parts of Europe. This is in line with the goal of selling 70 percent of the Jeep range worldwide as electrified vehicles by 2025, the brand announced in a press release. The introduction of the new model year starts immediately with the start of orders in Italy, Spain, Belgium and Serbia. In the course of this month, the order books in other European countries are to be opened.
The 2022 Wrangler 4xe differs from the current model with a few minor updates. The PHEV drive with two electric motors that deliver 280 kW and a 17 kWh battery remains unchanged. But: Instead of the 40 kilometers electric range according to US homologation from summer 2020, the Stellantis subsidiary now states an electric range of more than 50 kilometers in the WLTP city cycle.
The updates mainly affect the driver assistance systems. The new model year has, among other things, an automatic high beam control, a collision warning system including brake assist and an adaptive cruise control with stop function on board as standard. The current (and future) series scope also includes a blind spot warning system with rear intersection detection, a reversing camera and a front and rear parking assistant.
There are also new "customization options", including an optional gorilla glass windshield from Jeep Performance Parts (JPP), a Sunrider flip roof from Mopar, which complements the current convertible top combinations, and some special colors. In terms of networking, the new Wrangler 4xe now comes up with the UconnectTM Services connectivity service, which can be used to manage charging processes and remote control the car, among other things.
As mentioned briefly above, nothing changes in the PHEV layout: The combustion engine is a 2.0 liter four-cylinder gasoline engine from the Global Medium Engine family from FCA. The turbo engine is supported by two high-voltage electric motors: One is located on the front of the engine and, as a motor-generator unit, replaces the classic alternator and starter. This electric motor is used, for example, for more convenient operation of the automatic start-stop system, but also as a generator to charge the high-voltage battery. The electric motor integrated in the eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF is more important for the drive. The transmission with the designation ZF 8P75PH comes from the bulk order for hybrid transmissions that FCA placed with the Lake Constance group last yearhas made. The battery is mounted under the back seat and, according to Jeep, consists of 96 NMC cells and has an energy content of 17 kilowatt hours.
Technically, the plug-in drive of the off-road vehicle Wrangler has nothing in common with the part-time electric vehicles of the two compact SUVs Renegade and Compass . Because this duo relies on a so-called transaxle hybrid: the combustion engine and an electric motor only drive the front axle, a second electric motor only the rear axle.
