It has long been known that Volvo wants to deviate from the previous alphanumeric naming scheme for future e-models - the XC90 successor is supposed to start here. Volvo boss Hakan Samuelsson now revealed in an interview with "Automotive News" that the model name of the electric XC90 successor will begin with a vowel.
As the “Carbuzz†portal is now reporting, some “clever people on the Internet†have scoured the latest trademark registrations - and found what they were looking for. In October, Volvo had the name Embla protected. It is reportedly the first brand name that Volvo has filed with a vowel at the beginning in four years.
The successor to the XC90 is to be presented next year and will be built at the US plant in Ridgeville in South Carolina. It is also known that the E-SUV will be the first Volvo on a purely electric platform. The two current E-models XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge are based on the CMA mixing platform . The meaning of the alleged model name would also fit the first “Purpose Design†electric model: Embla is the first woman in Norse mythology.
Samuelsson made it clear that Volvo has great hopes for the vehicle - and not just because of the break in the name. “It is born electric, so there won't be any of the compromises that come with when you turn a car with a combustion engine into an electric vehicle,†said the Volvo boss. “That means we don't have to worry about where the engine and exhaust are going. This car will have a flat floor and a spacious interior. It will be the perfect family car in Europe and the USA, where the current XC90 is very popular. "
In the summer, Volco presented the Concept Recharge design study, which should give an outlook on the design line. However, the production model is expected to be offered with an optional third row of seats as a seven-seater - the study only had four individual seats. That would also be a distinguishing feature of the XC90 / Embla to the Polestar 3 , which is also to be built in Ridgeville on the same technical basis.
